Sugar Renewable Energy

With the EU Sugar Regime going through a major reform and bio-ethanol becoming the biofuel of choice for many governments around the world, Global Foods decided in 2005 to actively look for opportunities to develop sugar cane production and processing capacity in Brazil.

Together with Santelisa Vale, a joint venture was created with the objective to build and operate four greenfield cane plantations and mills. After a private placement completed in 2006, private equity investors Carlyle/Riverstone, Goldman Sachs, DAC and Discovery co-invested with Santelisa Vale and Global Foods to establish Companhia Nacional de Açúcar e Álcohool.

Sugar, bioethanol and bioenergy

Today, CNAA has two operating mills, two more mills under construction and over 3,000 employees. It produces sugar, bio-ethanol and bio-electricity, for sale domestically and in export markets.
